Mayport Village (Jacksonville - Duval County) - Designated: 1997

Located at the mouth of the St. John's River, Mayport Village is located in Duval County, in the Jacksonville metro area. Deriving its name from the French name for the river, the River of May, Mayport regards itself as a community devoted to commercial fishing. With less than 300 residents, the community has been struggling to preserve its working waterfront throughout the last decade. Recently, many villagers find themselves outnumbered as they face a looming future of becoming a cruise ship terminal. Locals determined that the fishing industry, the ferry and the Mayport Marine Science Center are essential to Mayport's way of life. For now, the partnership is working to improve relations with local leadership and re-engage its citizenry to create a future that embraces commercial fishing.
